Chiropractors are BRAIN doctors, not pain doctors! The brain and spinal cord control all functions of the body and delegate 70% of the work to our autonomic or “automatic” nervous system, the part of the brain we don’t have to consciously control or think about. Pulse, breathing rate, and digestion are a few examples of the automatic nervous system.
Healing takes place under the parasympathetic nervous system and emergencies are handled by the sympathetic nervous system. We need both systems to survive but they need to be balanced.
The brain and spinal cord are protected by the skull and vertebral column. 90% of the energy the brain needs to regulate our bodies comes from the motion of the spine. If the spine is moving properly, we experience health and healing.
Physical, chemical and emotional stress causes brain and neurologic inflammation and stress. The more inflammation and stress we have, the faster brain and spinal degeneration occur.
Vertebral subluxations are misalignments of the individual vertebral segments that cause loss of motion. The more subluxations present, the less motion we have in our spines. The less motion we have in the spine, the less energy the brain has to control our bodies. The less brain energy we have, the faster brain and spine deteriorate and we become sicker and sicker.

History of Chiropractic
Ancient artwork from Europe, Asia, and Africa depicts images of ancient doctors performing spinal manipulations on their patients. This illustrates that spinal adjustments are one of the oldest forms of therapy known to man. DD Palmer, the inventor of chiropractic, established the chiropractic profession in 1895. Since that time, chiropractic has become the profession best known for displaying the greatest expertise in the healing art of spinal manipulation.
Chiropractors adjust the spine to bring about healthy changes to the spine and nervous system. The goal of the chiropractic adjustment is to restore proper movement and alignment of the bones in the spinal column. This promotes the proper function of the nerves related to the spine and harmonious relationships between the joints of the spine. This further allows the body’s natural self-correcting mechanisms of the spine to make the proper corrections. There are many ways chiropractors adjust the spine.
There are over 200 officially recognized techniques for adjusting the spine. The most popular method of spinal adjustment is called “diversified” adjusting. In diversified adjusting, the chiropractor uses his hands to detect misalignments and then apply a manual force to reposition the vertebra of the spine. This often is associated with an audible sound. This audible sound has no real bearing on the success of the adjustment and should not be considered important to the patient. Other forms of spinal adjustment utilize much more subtle forces. Often gentle instruments are used to adjust the vertebra. Some techniques are so gentle that they require very little force at all.

Over time, the best technique for spinal adjustment may change as the condition of the patient changes. Feel free to communicate with your chiropractor what you like best or least about your spinal adjustments so that optimal treatment techniques can be delivered.
Following your first chiropractic adjustment, there may be some discomfort. This is a result of the body ridding itself of chemicals that promote spinal misalignments. Usually, this is experienced as soreness in the areas that were adjusted. If this should occur, apply an ice pack over the painful area for 10 minutes. This should bring about satisfactory results by reducing the soreness. Chiropractic adjustments work best in a series over a period of time where the beneficial results are built upon the previous adjustments.
The benefits of chiropractic adjustments are analogous to the benefits of exercise. Where one session of exercise most likely will not produce noticeable results, or may even cause discomfort, a series of exercise sessions over a period of weeks or months will create extraordinary health benefits.
